Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the prestigious cup on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable triumph in the match featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the net early on.

However, Marseille fired twice in the closing moments to take a shock advantage. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial leveler in the dying moments to send the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to complete a 4-1 shootout win.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the past thirteen seasons.
