Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
